Nationalism is pride, loyalty and devotion that an individual or a group has for their nation. A nation is a group of people that share a common way of life, and that way of life is generally comprised of three primary identifiers: language, religion, and historical identity.
Germany really had none of these criteria’s for nationalism. After Napolian I's defeat in 1815, Germany was established as 39 different states. Many Germans wanted political unification, but the states could not agree on one form of government. Due to the many separate states, revolutions that took place had different leadership, aims, and outcomes. Monarchies were eventually overthrown in 1848.
Most Germans saw no way to unite due to states wanting more power than other states. They were making progress by creating a national currency. But politicians could still not agree on one form of government.
